Cricket Resumes with PAK vs ENG Series
England and Pakistan are ready to play their part for the resumption of cricket which is still comatose due to ongoing pandemic COVID-19. Pakistani squad (who tested negative) reached England on 28th June and completed their 14-day quarantine period at Blackfinch New Road, Worcester. The tour will officially commence from August 5 consisting of three tests and three t20 International matches. All the action will be played behind closed doors with new ICC regulations in Bio Secure environment.
The first Test Match at Old Trafford in Manchester while second and third test matches will be at The Rose Bowl Stadium in Southampton. The main reason behind choosing these venues was their ON -Site Hotel Facility which helps to create Bio-Secure Bubble as no team bus travels and no stepping out. To prevent and spread harmful organisms from outside world Players will live in a gated community with no physical access to the outer world. The visitors will be tested after every five days to minimize the risk. Steve Elworthy, England and Wales Cricket’s Board of Director believes the way arrangements are structured they are enough to handle the worst-case scenario.
New guidelines amid COVID-19
International Cricket Council issued a new set of guidelines to ensure the safety of players and reduce the risks posed by COVID 19.
COVID Substitute: What if a Player tests positive or shows symptoms? A “like for like” replacement is proposed by ICC and teams will be allowed to replace players only during test matches.
No Saliva: Players will not be permitted to use Saliva to shine the ball. ICC medical expert Dr Peter highlighted the risk of transmission of the virus through Saliva. The batting team will be rewarded 5 penalty runs after two official warnings if the bowling team keeps using saliva on the ball. In case Saliva is applied to the ball, umpires will make sure to clean the ball. Former bowling greats like Micheal Holding, Shoaib Akhtar, Shaun Pollack have questioned the ban on Saliva as it will immensely affect the bowling unit and their performance.
Home Umpires: Local Umpires and Match officials from ICC Elite panel are allowed to officiate the proceedings for the first time since 2002. The requirement to appoint Neutral Umpires is temporarily lifted because of Travel Restrictions.
Extra Review: ICC approved an additional DRS review for each team per innings so there should be no bias in favour of, or against, either team during officiating, earlier each team was awarded 2 DRS reviews per innings of a test match and 1 review in an ODI. ICC doesn’t want the less experienced local umpires to hurt the result of a game.
Additional LOGO: As teams and cricket boards have taken a financial hit due to the stoppage of cricketing activities. A logo not exceeding 32 square inches alongside three other logos is now allowed by ICC to help Cricket Nations earn few bucks. Previously teams could not put any logo on the chest of a shirt of a test match.
Moreover, Players are encouraged to maintain social distance and avoid body contact as much as possible, Players will not be handing over their stuff to umpires as well. ICC also suggested using a larger squad for the tours.
PAK vs ENG series: Coaches, Teams, Conditions
England cricket team is currently playing their final test match of the series against West Indies while the Pakistani team has engaged themselves in Intra-Team warm matches to prepare. Pakistan announced a 29-member Squad for England Tour, on the other hand, we expect the current squad of England playing against West Indies to face Green team. England holds a better position at test ranking with no 4 position while Pakistan is struggling with at no 7. If we take a look at World Championship England has moved to no 3position with 180 points after levelling the series with Careeban squad, however, Pakistan holds no 5 Position with 140 points. Both the team will be eyeing to secure a better place at the table through their performances.
Pakistan have hired the services of Younis Khan and Mushtaq Ahmed as Batting and spin Bowling Coaches respectively to uplift the performance of the team. It is Younis Khan’s first assignment with PCB and he is keen to transfer his skills & knowledge to the young guns of the squad by implementing man-management model like late Bob Woolmer. Mushtaq, on the other hand, is experienced and have already worked with both Pakistan and England in the past. He understands English conditions, squad, and highly regarded as mentor globally. Both the veterans will assist Misbah and Waqar to achieve their targets.
Playing against England at their Home soil is always been a tough task for any touring side. Pakistan have shortlisted 20 players for the uphill task ahead. Wahab Riaz, Fawad Alam, Sarfaraz Ahmad, Sohail khan have paved their way back into the team, Skipper Azhar Ali is concerned with over-rate as players will have to leave their Personal stuff outside the boundary line meanwhile he’s hopeful that players will eventually adapt to new rules over the course of time. Pakistan and England will be looking to exploit each other weaknesses, English bowlers will target the fragile batting department of Pakistani team while Pakistan will once again rely on their Pace attack to dismantle the Englishmen. Bio-secure environment will help the players to improve team bonding and focus on Cricket as there won’t be much of other stuff to do.
The PCB CEO Wasim Khan admitted it wasn’t an easy decision to send the team to England after several players tested positive of Novel Coronavirus but continued with the plan for the sake of restoration of Gentleman game. Pakistani team head Coach Misbah insisted that PCB has not asked for anything in return from ECB for agreeing to play under these circumstances. Playing behind closed doors will not be something new as Pakistan mainly played test matches in UAE with empty seats, he further added. ECB chief Executive officer, Tom Harrison sees this series as another significant step towards to Re-Start International Cricket, he also appreciated the players, staff members for their willingness and cooperation for playing a vital role in Bring the action back at cricket Grounds.
